A FOMOCO style starter may need an occasional shim to allign the drive gear and flwheel teeth. 4. You can use washers, and figure out easily if it is an alingment problem. If the mounting bolt is loose, the starter drive will not engage the flywheel properly. It will make a grinding noise when you try to fire up your engine. FWIW I used to start my VW with a screw driver every day as a kid. It only tears up the screw driver if you don't have a strong connection.
